Mothership Glass: Cosmic Craft & Cultural Orbit

Written by NuggNotes

Dead Show Spark

In 1993 Scott Deppe hit a Grateful Dead show and bought his first blown pipe. Back in Idaho he grabbed a torch and glass from a hardware store. His living room became the first lab. A mushroom spoon marked the start of his path in functional glass.

Self-Taught Vision

With little guidance he taught himself to “deconstruct things with my mind.” Aside from a single goblet class he worked alone, creating pieces like Take Me to the Mothership and Deady Bear that pushed glass toward fine art.

Studio Landing

In 2012 Scott Deppe and Jake Colito created the first Fab Egg. By 2013 Mothership Glass was official in Bellingham, Washington, with a mission to make “the best functional glass in the galaxy.”

Dream Team

Mothership built a crew as much as a brand. Jake Colito, Quave, Davin Titland, Dosa Glass, Punty, JD Maplesden—each sharpened under Deppe’s torch before branching out. Alumni carried the “Mothership tax” into the wider glass world.

Fab Egg Revolution

Inspired by Fabergé, the Fab Egg fused form and function. Swiss percs and circular design gave smoother hits. $1,000 pieces later climbed to five figures.

Klein & Ball Magic

The Klein Recycler’s looping system and 72-hole Flower of Life perc showed engineering at work. The Ball Rig’s sphere-within-sphere design proved glass could merge physics with function.

Market Shift

Before Mothership, pipes were tools. After, they became art. Limited drops, strict quality control and selective distribution built scarcity, with resale markets pushing up to $200,000.

Culture Elevated

Low-temp dabbing, sacred geometry percs and German Schott glass set new standards. Consumption became a ritual. Cannabis shifted from utility to design, from counterculture to presentation.

Global Orbit

Through Meltdown events and hologram glass, Mothership spread worldwide. Collectors and galleries trace it back to Bellingham, setting the benchmark for American functional glass.

Legacy Eternal

From a home torch to a leading studio, Mothership fused craft, science and culture. Still innovating, still refining, still the Mothership.
